About the Program

History is the Teacher of Life

More than two thousand years ago, the Roman statesman and philosopher Cicero described history as the “light of truth” and the “teacher of life.” His words continue to capture why the study of history remains essential today.
History preserves the memory of humanity. It allows us to encounter the people, ideas, achievements, failures, hopes, and struggles that have shaped our world. Through history, we discover not only what happened in the past, but also how human beings have sought meaning, built communities, exercised power, pursued justice, created beauty, and responded to the deepest questions of existence.
Yet history is far more than a collection of dates and facts. The past does not come to us neatly organized. Much has been lost, forgotten, or left unsaid. The historian’s task is therefore one of discovery. Working with documents, letters, artworks, artifacts, buildings, and other surviving evidence, historians reconstruct the stories of the past and seek to understand their significance.
In this sense, history resembles detective work. Historians follow clues and ask questions that are both challenging and profoundly human. What happened? Why did it happen? What motivated people to act as they did? What ideas inspired them? What fears drove them? How did their choices shape the world that we have inherited?
The excitement of history lies in this search. Every source is a clue. Every discovery opens new questions. Every generation revisits the past with fresh eyes, seeking deeper understanding and new insights.

St. Francis of Assisi — 800 Years of Adventure

The University of St. Thomas will dedicate Fall 2026 to a campus-wide commemoration of St. Francis of Assisi. This initiative seeks to renew in us the desire for a deeper understanding of Francis’s legacy through historical, theological, scientific, artistic, philosophical, cultural, and communal explorations. By engaging with Francis and the Franciscans from many perspectives, we hope to rediscover how his experience can illuminate our own and enrich the life of our university.
