Commencement

A native of Stamford, Texas, Archbishop Vásquez brings decades of pastoral leadership and service to the Church in Texas. He earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from St. Mary’s Seminary in Houston and a licentiate in theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1984 for the Diocese of San Angelo. 

During the course of his ministry, Archbishop Vásquez has served as Auxiliary Bishop of Galveston-Houston, Bishop of Austin and, most recently, was installed as Archbishop of Galveston-Houston on March 25, 2025. He has also held numerousleadership roles with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, including serving as chair of the Committee on Migration and as a consultant to the Committee on Pro-Life Activities.
