Campus Ministry influences every part of the University of St. Thomas. Whether you are Catholic from childhood, exploring the faith for the first time, or seeking to renew your faith, Campus Ministry welcomes you. Campus Ministry enhances the spiritual life of the entire University community through liturgy, prayer, retreats, small groups, Bible studies, men’s and women’s faith formation, sacramental preparation, service opportunities, and pastoral care.
Campus Ministry at UST is defined by the Basilian Fathers’ tradition of goodness, discipline, and knowledge within the context of our community. We direct all of our activities to the greatest good, God, and the good of others.

Find Your Place
Campus Ministry helps students build the discipline and habits that they need to live out their faith not just on campus, but also in the world. We remind students that learning happens inside and outside of the classroom. Campus Ministry helps students continue to learn about their relationship with God, whether through our weekly faith formation, liturgies, or spiritual direction. As a community, we practice our faith, growing in our relationships with God and each other.

Our Place of Worship
The Chapel of St. Basil
The Basilian Fathers founded the University of St. Thomas in 1947. The Chapel of St. Basil at UST is named after the patron of the Basilian Fathers, St. Basil the Great, who was a champion of Catholic education. He saw the importance of both faith and reason. The renowned architect, Philip Johnson, designed the Chapel of St. Basil as a focal point of faith on campus, just as Doherty library is a symbol of reason.
The Chapel of St. Basil is a place of worship and celebration. Holy Mass is celebrated daily. Students, faculty, staff, and alumni celebrate the sacraments in the chapel, including adult baptisms, confessions, weddings, the Eucharist, confirmation, and anointing of the sick.

Campus Chaplain
The Rev. Eduardo Rivera ’14, M.Div. ’20, earned his bachelor’s in theology and philosophy at UST and his master’s in divinity through St. Mary’s Seminary. During his second year at the University, he joined the Basilian Fathers as an associate and entered the novitiate after graduation. Fr. Eduardo was ordained on May 23, 2020 at St. Anne Catholic Community in Houston, Texas. Fr. Eduardo became UST’s Chaplain in 2023.

Campus Ministry at UST consists of many different ministries that each require your unique talents.
Our retreats include:

We also have small groups including:

- OCIA and Adult Confirmation preparation

Peer Ministry
Peer Ministers evangelize and help develop the faith community on campus. Students are expected to support the University’s Catholic mission by maintaining the highest possible moral and ethical standards in their work with others.
Social Media Ministry
Campus Ministry Social Media Interns help to evangelize and spread the Good News through social media by creating and posting engaging and spiritual content. Students are expected to support the University’s Catholic mission by maintaining the highest possible moral and ethical standards in their work with others.
Hispanic Minisitry
Campus Ministry Hispanic Ministry Interns help to create opportunities through spiritual growth for the campus community through advocating for the Hispanic community on campus, educating the campus community on various Hispanic cultural traditions, and hosting events.
Household Ministry
Campus Ministry Household Interns are responsible for serving as a liaison between household members and Campus Ministry, leading planning meetings for large-scale household events, and being a resource for households. Students are expected to support the University’s Catholic mission by maintaining the highest possible moral and ethical standards in their work with others.
Liturgical Ministry
Campus Ministry Liturgical Ministry Interns help to create opportunities for spiritual growth for the campus community within the Chapel. Students are expected to support the University’s Catholic mission by maintaining the highest possible moral and ethical standards in their work with others.
Music Ministry
Campus Ministry Music Ministry Interns exist to lead worship and organize worship teams for the community at Mass and more intimately for the student community at Praise and Worship, retreats, and other events and campus initiatives where needed. The music minister should foster a focus of prayer through worship and lead others into a deeper and more meaningful prayer experience. Students are expected to support the University’s Catholic mission by maintaining the highest possible moral and ethical standards in their work with others.
Retreat Ministry
Campus Ministry Retreat Interns serve the students of UST by providing opportunities for them to encounter Christ in retreat settings. By taking a sabbath away for a day, a weekend, or more, students can go deeper with Christ and hear His voice outside the business of their normal lives. Students are expected to support the University’s Catholic mission by maintaining the highest possible moral and ethical standards in their work with others.
Service Ministry
Campus Ministry Service Interns enable students to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with the hungry, sick, imprisoned, homeless, and strangers right here in Houston and beyond. Through prayer and various community services and projects, students involved commit themselves to serve the poor, neglected, and the needy. Through the corporal and spiritual works of mercy, students actively participate in caring for those in need as they encounter Christ in these people, as Jesus says in Scripture: “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”–Matthew 25:40. Students are expected to support the University’s Catholic mission by maintaining the highest possible moral and ethical standards in their work with others.

Become a Liturgical Minister
Liturgical ministry is an excellent opportunity to fulfill your baptismal call of service to one another. Our liturgies utilize the talents and gifts that God has fully given this community before, during, and after the Mass. Whether participation is through “behind the scenes” preparation and planning or through a public role of service within the Mass, community participation helps our liturgies to be truly life-giving celebrations.
We are always looking for more students, faculty, staff and community members to get involved with our liturgies. We offer individual and group training for these ministries during the semester.
Volunteers can serve in these ministries during weekdays or on the weekends:

- Altar Server
- Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion
- Sacristan
- Hospitality
