UST CARE Team

The University of St. Thomas CARE Team serves as a multidisciplinary group of professionals dedicated to promoting student well-being, safety, and success. The CARE Team helps identify students who may be experiencing challenges and connects them with appropriate resources and support before concerns escalate into a crisis. 

Whether a student is facing personal difficulties, emotional distress, academic challenges, basic needs concerns, or exhibiting concerning behavior, the CARE Team provides a coordinated approach to assessment, intervention, and support. 

The CARE Team reflects the University’s commitment to fostering a caring community rooted in the Basilian values of goodness, discipline and knowledge in our UST community. 

How To

When Should I Submit a CARE Referral?

A CARE referral may be appropriate when you are concerned about a student’s well-being, behavior, or ability to be successful at the University. 

Examples of concerns may include: 

  • Appears distressed, withdrawn, or unusually anxious. 
  • Experiences a significant change in academic performance or attendance. 
  • Exhibits concerning behavior that impacts their well-being or the campus community. 
  • Discloses personal challenges such as illness, housing insecurity, or loss. 
  • Expresses thoughts of hopelessness or harm to self or others. 


If you are unsure whether a situation warrants a referral, you are encouraged to submit a report. The CARE Team can assess the concern and determine appropriate next steps.

CARE Team Details

The CARE Team reviews submitted concerns and works collaboratively to assess the situation and determine appropriate support. Depending on the nature of the concern, a member of the CARE Team may reach out to the student to offer assistance, connect them with campus resources, or discuss available supportive measures. 

The CARE Team’s goal is to help students navigate challenges and remain connected to the resources they need to succeed. 

The CARE Team includes representatives from key student support and campus safety offices, including: 

  • Dean of Students Office 
  • Campus Police 
  • Counseling and Wellness Services 
  • Academic Advising 
  • Student Success 
  • Residence Life, and  
  • Access and Disability Services 

Additional campus partners may be consulted as appropriate based on the nature of the concern. 

The CARE Team is not an emergency response service. 

If there is an immediate threat to the health or safety of any person, call 911 or contact UST Campus Police at 713-525-3888 immediately.

Yes. Many referrals involve situations where someone notices a change in behavior or simply has a concern about a student. The CARE Team can evaluate the information and determine whether follow-up is appropriate. 

Absolutely. Students are encouraged to seek support whenever they are experiencing challenges that may affect their well-being, academic success, or campus experience. 

The CARE Team strives to protect the privacy of individuals who report concerns whenever possible. However, certain situations may require disclosure of information as part of the University’s response or due process obligations. 

Depending on the situation, the CARE Team may connect students with counseling services, academic support, disability resources, health and wellness services, financial or basic needs assistance, campus resources, and other supportive measures designed to help students address challenges and remain engaged in their education. 

The CARE Team serves as part of the University’s broader effort to promote a safe and supportive campus environment. Through coordinated assessment and intervention, the team works to identify concerns, reduce risk, and support students while balancing the well-being of both the individual student and the campus community.
