Counseling & Wellness Services

Supporting Students As They Navigate College Life

About Our Office

Counseling & Wellness for UST

UST Counseling and Wellness Services provides confidential personal counseling, consultation, and related initiatives to enrolled University of St. Thomas undergraduate and graduate students to support and facilitate their academic success and personal growth. Counseling and Wellness Services is committed to the Catholic mission and upholding the core values of the Basilian Fathers: goodness, discipline, knowledge, done in community. We prioritize serving God and our students as we build relationships that will impact and empower the community.

Our Services

Free, Short-term support

Located on the 2nd floor of Crooker Center, counseling from licensed mental health professionals is free and confidential for currently enrolled students. Our goal is to support students in addressing the challenges they may face on their journey toward academic success and human flourishing.

However, these challenges do not need to be significant for you to visit our office. Maybe you just need help navigating your life circumstances or adjusting to college life. You are not alone. These services are available to currently enrolled UST students, who are residing in Texas, and are generally offered on a short-term basis.

Some of the most common issues students want to talk about involve:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Relationships
  • Academics
  • Life changes

Frequently Asked Questions

If you are in need of setting an appointment you can call, email, or walk into our office. Our phone number is 713-525-2169. Our email address is cws@stthom.edu. We are located in Crooker room 206. If you need after–hours support, you may call 988 or campus police and ask to speak with the counselor on-call.

Anyone who suspects someone else needs help is welcome to complete a consultation with a counselor. For a non-emergency situation, you may communicate with the CARE Team who can then refer to CWS as needed. If it is an emergency or there is imminent danger, please call USTPD at 713-525-3888. If it is an off-campus emergency, please call 911.

Yes! Counselors are considered confidential employees under FERPA and also maintain HIPAA under their professional licenses. Limits to this confidentiality include:

  • If the counselor has cause to believe there is a probability of imminent physical harm to yourself or another person.
  • If the counselor has cause to believe that a child, elderly person, or a person with a disability is being abused, neglected, or exploited.
  • If it is reported that someone has been sexually exploited by a mental health care provider.
  • If Counseling and Wellness Services receives a valid subpoena or court order, and/or you are involved in a criminal case.
  • If you are a minor (under the age of 18), you will be subject to different guidelines which the counselor will explain.

These (and other) exceptions to confidentiality are rare. If one should occur, the counselor will attempt (whenever possible) to discuss with you any action under consideration. However, counselors are not legally obligated to do so, especially if such a discussion would prevent Counseling and Wellness staff from securing your safety or the safety of others.

Counseling and Wellness Services counselors will not acknowledge you to others (e.g., parents, professors, staff, etc.) without your consent. In order to avoid the possibility that others will infer you are a client, your counselor will typically not speak to you outside the office unless you speak to your counselor first. Please refer to the Notice of Privacy and Confidentiality Practices for more information.

Due to our short-term format, a student may have about five counseling sessions per semester, focusing on a specific, measurable goal to drive those sessions.

There are never any fees charged by CWS.

We are in Crooker Center on the second floor, Room 206.
