Svendsen’s research centers on the artistic and intellectual milieu of mid-19th to mid-20th-century Britain and France. She has focused especially on the traces of artists’ theological reading and experience of liturgy in their works. The work and thought of the poet and painter David Jones (1895-1974) and his circle take prominence in their profound treatment of the philosophy of art, theological Modernism and Anti-Modernism, Roman Catholic liturgy, Catholic social criticism, and medieval art and thought. She has published and presented on twentieth-century writers such as David Jones, T.S. Eliot, Wilfred Owen, C.C. Martindale, Martin D’Arcy, Jacques Maritain, James Frazer (amongst others), as well as on the medieval liturgical ‘Cult of the Cross’ tradition. She is currently working on a literary history of Jones’s engagement with Jesuit artists and scholars. Having previously served as the Associate Director of the David Jones Research Center, Dr. Svendsen is co-director of the David Jones Digital Archive, an international collaboration of over five higher institutions including Cambridge Digital Humanities (Cambridge University Library), Boston College, and the National Library of Wales
