Sean Messarra is an intellectual historian and scholar of early modern political thought with additional expertise in pre- and post-Reformation Catholic ecclesiology, Spanish imperial ideology from “the encounter” (el encuentro) with the indios through to the independence of Latin American states, and the body of international relations theory associated with the commentary tradition of the Roman law of nations (ius gentium) from Francisco de Vitoria to Immanuel Kant. His overarching interest in each of these domains has been the political, cultural, and intellectual aspects of the early modern Spanish world, from the remnants of Tenochtitlan to the Mariana Islands and back to Salamanca and Madrid. Messarra is currently preparing a book on the conceptual history of representation in the political thought of the School of Salamanca.
