Timothy Furlan, Ph.D. is the Burnett Family Distinguished Professor of Ethics and Director of the Center for Ethical Leadership at the University of St. Thomas in Houston, TX. He previously studied at Thomas Aquinas College (B.A.) before completing his graduate studies in philosophy at the University of Chicago (M.A.) and Trinity College Dublin (Ph.D.). During his doctoral studies, He was also a visiting doctoral scholar at the Universite de Paris (IV) (Sorbonne) and a Swiss Confederation Fellow at the Universite de Fribourg.
Before coming to UST, He was a philosophy professor at Xavier University and Boston College, a postdoctoral research fellow at Harvard Medical School, editor of the Harvard Journal of Bioethics, and received his Master’s degree in bioethics (summa cum laude) from Harvard Medical School. He is currently completing a master’s in public administration from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and will be a visiting scholar at Cambridge University (Center for Law, Medicine, and the Life Sciences) during the 2026 Michaelmas term.
He is also the author of three forthcoming books with Cambridge University Press on Aristotle and the role of luck and tragedy in our lives, Thomas Aquinas on primary and secondary causality, and the role of double effect reasoning in the law, medicine, and contemporary public policy.
