Camryn Gonzales graduated in December 2025 with a degree in nursing. However, her path to nursing as a career was not always a given and yet God managed to unveil how caring for others was innate in her very being.

Hailing from a musical family, Gonzales always believed her future was tied to music, but after an accident and subsequent infection landed her in the hospital for several months, it was the kindness and care she received from her nurses that challenged her to pursue something different.

“After everything that happened, I was like ‘Lord, I surrender this to you,’” Gonzales said. “After that I knew I wanted to study nursing. I wanted to be what my nurses were to me, that superhero.”

When she began attending the University of St. Thomas (UST), she decided to formalize that desire, declaring herself a joint nursing and psychology major and beginning the demanding process that included studies, clinicals and hands-on experience in the hospital. That didn't mean that her interest in music was cast aside. Gonzales continued to exercise her creativity and express her faith through music as a worship leader with UST Campus Ministry’s praise and worship group, Vessels. Through Vessels she was able to continue to praise God for all the good in her life and share that love and joy with others.

Now, as Gonzales steps into the next phase of life she is walking into a full-circle moment, landing a job as a nurse at Memorial Hermann Hospital, the hospital where she received care all those years ago and working alongside some of the same nurses who helped her along her healing journey.

“I think that through the suffering, through every single surgery and through every single tear, it all makes sense now,” Gonzales said. “One thing that I want is for the scars on my body to be signs of hope.”
