Andy Liu, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Finance in the Cameron School of Business at the University of St. Thomas. He earned his Ph.D. in Finance from West Virginia University.

Dr. Liu’s research focuses on empirical corporate finance, with particular interests in sovereign wealth funds, corporate governance, CEO compensation, capital structure, and the cost of corporate debt. His research examines how ownership structures, governance mechanisms, and institutional environments influence corporate policies and financial outcomes. An important theme of his research is understanding how financial decisions and corporate practices can contribute not only to firm value, but also to broader social and economic well-being. His work has been published in leading academic journals, including the Journal of Corporate Finance and Corporate Governance: An International Review.

Dr. Liu’s teaching interests span corporate finance and investments, including Principles of Finance, International Finance, Investments, Financial Institutions and Markets, and Fixed Income Securities. His teaching philosophy emphasizes connecting financial theory to students’ personal experiences and everyday financial decisions, helping students develop a deeper understanding of financial concepts and apply them to real-world situations. He also emphasizes the importance of ethical and socially responsible practices in finance and the role that financial professionals can play in promoting the common good. Through his teaching, Dr. Liu seeks to prepare students not only to become knowledgeable business practitioners and future leaders, but also responsible members of society who recognize the broader social consequences of financial decisions.
